Just Running Hot

July 15 – The weather is hot and the car is hot.  The only thing not hot is our luck.  Boys worked hard all week to try to cure our mechanical woes.  Traveled to Wakeeney and got second in the heat race, so I thought our luck had finally turned.  But car still didn’t sound right to the boys.  They changed the spark plugs and checked the timing.  Jacob had the pole for the feature, so I had my expectations way too high.  He had a bad start as he got down too far on the inside getting into the mud and spinning his tires which caused him to loose a lot of spots very quickly.  It was a full field of cars if I remember right.  He managed to drive back up and get 6th.  But afterwards, the car was overheating again and no one was happy with it.

Next morning, they dive in on repairs and find the distributor is cracked.  Had to have happened near the end of the race so I guess we are lucky he was able to even hang on for 6th!  They change it along with all the plug wires.  Had a flat tire for some reason overnight, so change that as well as springs.  Run the valves and there is more than one that needs tightened.  Clean the radiator and basically try to go through everything to prepare for Sunday.

Jacob comes out of the heat race and car is really hot again.  I’ve never really seen the boys this frustrated or stumped.  He starts mid-pack in the feature and pretty much it is follow the leader.  It is a one lane race track and not a lot of racing, just a lot of dirt flying.  Afterwards, the boys find the car wasn’t running any where close to the RPMs he should have been running so things seem to continue to get worse.  We must have ruined something.

Boys travel home Sunday and are back out in the heat pulling the engine.  They will go through everything and try to get it ready for next weekend.  Hopefully the hard work will pay off soon.  We really need to finish strong to get some Rookie points.  We’ll travel to Hutchinson on Friday night and more than likely, make the long haul to Mayetta for Saturday night.  Twenty-one races left that can count towards a better points standing, so Jacob still has a shot at it.
