Beat by a Junebug!
Grandpa Carl, Grandma Effie, Uncle Rich and all of us retire to the hotel a bit disappointed. The next morning, Jacob and Steve go immediately to the track to go through the car while the rest of us hit the garage sales of Goddard. Then, we had a nice relaxing lunch and celebrate Grandma Effie’s 87th birthday a day early. Next, we went to the track and played some cards while waiting for race time. About that time, the clouds start firing up again and it looks to be a repeat of the night before – in more ways than just the weather!
Jacob goes out to hot lap and the car dies. At this point, Steve moves from thinking it is a fuel problem to electrical and buys some parts and makes changes. He has the pole for his heat race and once again, makes a lap and it dies! By this point, there is nothing left to change except the brand new carburetor. I ask the track to let Jacob do one lap behind the Econos to see if it is fixed this time. Steve looks at the carburetor and finds a junebug stuck in it! I’ve always hated those bugs.
Since he didn’t get to run his heat, he starts in the back of the feature with ten cars. Jacob makes his way to 6th place when the checkered flies. At the same time, they announce the races are over due to a storm moving in and at the same time, the tornado sirens go off! You never saw stands and pits cleared out so fast. It was kind of spooky but no worries. We all drove away and didn’t even see hail.
Now, I am packing and waiting for the phone call with race results from Sunday night at Colby. I just hate it when I can’t be there. This is only the second race of the season I have had to miss, so I guess I can’t complain. I’ll post updates about Colby on Facebook.
Next weekend, we’ll be at Wakeeney on Friday night and Hays on Saturday. Already looking forward to an Effie Cheeseburger and weekend at home!
