The Good, the Bad and the OK
May 2 - Another three day racing weekend started in Hays. By the end of the heat race, the bumper needed some serious repair. Thankfully, Uncle Rich knew someone that had a welder and the boys did their repairs. Jacob finished 9th out of 17th in the feature. That is his best feature finish so far and considering he just started, I couldn't be prouder.
Saturday, we travel on to Minneapolis. In the heat race, there is a pile up of cars with one on the top coming down on others and Jacob was caught up in the middle of it. It broke his A-Arm and he had no brakes, but Jacob finished the heat race! Good for him for not giving up. He was of course, a bit disappointed and he made a comment that Matthew's fuse was about a mile long while his is about 20 feet. Too funny! Don't know where he comes up with this stuff, but keeps us laughing.
Boys jumped on repairs to get him ready for the feature. Jacob gets a nose bleed and it just won't stop. We are trying everything you can imagine. Eventually, Uncle Rich has an official take him over to the ambulance to get some expert help. We learn to push up underneath your upper lip on a vein - something we had never heard before. He makes it out for the feature and gets a whole half lap in before spinning out. Turns out his crew chief over tightened the brake line during repairs and it broke off so Jacob had no brakes. When he got tapped in the rear, he couldn't use his brakes to right the car. Most of the field made it by him, but not all. That cost us a spindle, a tie rod, a rim and other repairs. Jacob made his apology tour through the pits. Some good guys that were understanding and encouraging.
Sunday morning, they got everything fixed. After an Effie cheeseburger, it is off to Wakeeney. Jacob got some great starting positions, but doesn't really have the power he needs as we hold him back so he can learn. He held on for a 11th place finish in the feature and no wrecks. So, we were happy to be able to load up and head home early.
Next weekend, there is only one race at Minneapolis. I hope spring shows up. Tired of the freezing cold nights! Oh, and yes, Matthew had to work all weekend so he is not racing until further notice. Two jobs, full-time college and full-time girlfriend has him pretty busy. But, he looks like someone shot his dog as he clearly wants to race. His Dad straightened his frame and repairs are still under way to his car. I learned more at the track from those that witnessed the crash. Let's just say, Mom isn't happy with a racer from Western Kansas that should find a new hobby cause he can't drive. If you are the 3rd car to spin out and can't see the two cars ahead of you, that is a problem. But, on top of it, to not have a clue as to what happened in front of you and then say very hateful things with no clue what happened - well, let's just say stupid is the nicest thing I can say! Ok - I am done venting for now.
Three weeks until Matthew graduates from high school. Big party in our future as we celebrate with Rylee's family. And a great summer ahead!!
