September 3 - Weekend didn't start very good as we blew a tire on the trailer on the way to the track. Steve is always wanting to leave extra early and always saying this is the reason why. Of course, if you say it often enough, eventually, it will happen! Luckily, it was just the tire without any other damage and the pit crew had it changed in record time.
At the track, Matthew came off from hot laps with engine problems so they worked on it. Ended up changing the carburetor. In the heat race, Matthew made a great move on the last lap to win his heat race. It was a fun race to watch and we thought things were turning the right direction at that point until he came off the track and said something was wrong again with the engine.
The boys tore into it for a third time and Steve spotted the problem. Broke valve spring. They took one off the spare engine and got it ready for the feature. Feature race was just painful. No other way to say it. They had changed too many things in the setup as Matthew was trying hard to win at the only track that he hadn't had success at this year. He ended up 8th and it is the only race of the year that I can remember just being glad it was over. Yuk.
Next day, they changed the gear, scaled the car, started changing the setup back, and then Steve found a bad u-joint. Now, that stupid u-joint took two trips to parts store and half the morning to change. Hard to believe a $25 part could be so difficult! The combination wasn't the same on each of the ends and I won't even try to explain it. We're on to Goodland for the track championship race.
Last year, at this same time, Matthew was tied for track championship when the engine blew. It was also his birthday so I had cupcakes and a party in the pits. No party allowed this year. Yes, just a little bit superstitious. His birthday is the next day anyway and who knew we'd still be there!

Then, the second place car changed the way he was driving it and started catching up. The laps couldn't go by fast enough. One more lap and he would have probably gotten past Matthew. But, luckily, Matthew hung on and took the feature by a nose. Made for an exciting finish! And Matthew captures his first track championship!
We waited for trophy presentations and due to a major wreck in the Hobbies that took out most of the field and sent one guy to the hospital, races were delayed for over an hour. Then, every class after had a wreck or two so it was after midnight before his trophy presentation. So, he got his first trophy at the age of 18.
The next day, our family had a small party for Matthew at Effie's. Matthew decided not to race at Norton so he could end the weekend on a great note and enjoy his birthday getting home in time to go hang out with friends. Plus, they are going to start going through the car and try to find out what is wrong. They will get it setup and be ready for Dodge City next weekend. Only five races left in September and two in October before our racing season ends! Of course, the second it ends, it is time to start getting two cars ready for next season so it never really ends! LOL. We are excited about getting Jacob in the Hobby Stock and he is really ready now, so it will be his turn to go for some Rookie Points while big brother coaches. This will be fun to watch!
