We Like It Like This!
June 26 - July 3: Two weekends of racing to update you about! But first, I learned the secret to gambling! Never use your own money! We stopped at the Dodge City casino before the races and after losing my money (all of $20), I made a little for Grandma Effie and for Uncle Rich. We all had a lot of fun.
At the track, Matthew took a 3rd place finish in points and 4th in cash since they had the Southern Sportmods mixed with them. Wishing they would tech the cars there. Bet that would change the order of finishes.
During the race, I was thinking Matthew would get second. He was right there and got under him once when he entered the last lap and seemed to drop off a bit. Returning to the pits after the race, he immediately told his dad he thought he had some brake problems on that last lap. Something was wrong. Then Jacob said the right rear was totally flat. Turns out there was a hole in the tire. So feeling pretty lucky now for our finish. I was thinking if we just wouldn't break or have a tire go down, how really great he has been running lately.
Saturday, after an Effie cheeseburger and some birthday cake with Cody, we are off to Wakeeney. Matthew wins his heat race and I run up to the stands to talk to everyone. Everyone is truly covered in dirt. Their white shirts are black and I say to Grandma Carol, "Everyone sure is eating a lot of dirt," to which she replies with a big grin "It was worth it!."
Matthew starts the feature inside the second row. Got in front and never looked back. Caution came out. He had a great restart and then was really pulling ahead until last five laps. Then the 2nd place car starting catching up. I just wanted that white flag to come out so bad!! He held on and Matthew wins the feature! In post-tech, everyone is congratulating him and I get to meet some of his fellow racers. They were really nice and it is fun to race guys like that.
After all the races were over, Matthew ran over to see his cheering section. I said, "Look how dirty they are!" Matthew said, "Yeah, we like it like this!" He loves a dry slick race track more than anyone I know. Uncle Clarence said he was still tired from yelling. It was so much fun! The boys have all worked hard in the pits this year, so this win really means a lot to them.
And what a great way to start a vacation! We don't have to fix the race car, so we take off Monday morning for Yellowstone. We only have five days since we need to be home on Friday, but it was still worth the long drive. The boys learned to fly fish and the view is just amazing. No GPS and no cell phones at one point and we survived! After a fast trip home, we get to the 110th LaCrosse High Reunion and get to see a lot of old friends. I was quickly reminded of how the years don't make a difference with good friends. We swapped some stories, had some laughs (and maybe a few beers), saw
the parade on Saturday and then we took off for our only race on the holiday weekend at Dodge City.
Night starts off great with Matthew winning his heat race. He starts the feature on the outside pole and immediately takes off to lead the entire race! He was a half a lap ahead when the first caution came out. I think we had three restarts and with each one of them, we were all nervous. But, Matthew didn't make any mistakes and kept pulling ahead. It was so much fun to watch.
They interviewed Matthew immediately after the race in Winner's Circle. When they asked him how he liked running here, he replied that he really liked it except for having to run with those Southern SportMods. It was pretty funny and later, he said to me he hoped they didn't cut his pay for saying that. LOL. He did a great job thanking his sponsors - I am pretty sure the Wilsons were named about four times! He was so happy to get his first win there. Rylee's entire family got to join us so it was just a perfect night to have everyone there. As Matthew says, "We like it like this!"
Next weekend, it is ladies night at Hays (ladies get in free). Then we are on to Goodland. Everybody is running on Saturday night so if there is any bad weather, I guess we have some options! Hope everyone had a great 4th of July. We got to enjoy a great, relaxing evening with Rylee's family while the boys blew things up. This best week of the entire year and I am very thankful for it. Also, Matthew has moved up to 1st in points in the State.
If we can keep running like this, then hopefully he can stay there!
