Two Firsts and a Top Five Make for Great Points Weekend!
June 20 - Matthew starts 9th in a field of 15 at Hays. On the back stretch of the first lap, a guy comes down on him knocking him into another guy. But, what was even more frustrating was they charged the caution to Matthew. He had a tire literally cut in half, so had to pit and go to the back anyway. Worse part was that it damaged another shock and another tire. Matthew drove from the back all the way to fourth! Just ran out of laps again. If he can just run one race there without getting hit or a bad call, I know he'll win. You can just see how well he can handle the car through traffic. Fun to be back in tech - even though I was still mad about the caution. Grandma Crowell did her best to let them know too. He is lucky to have such a cheering section!
On to Goodland Saturday night. It was fun to watch Jacob shuttle Grandpa Brandt and Grandma Effie on the four-wheeler to the stands. Only seven SportMods showed up, but it made for a good, clean race! What a concept!! Matthew was leading in his heat race and then made a mistake leaving the opening the guy needed to take the heat race win. I learned later that Matthew had went the wrong way four times adjusting his brakes during the race. Better in the heat race than the feature. I just think it is amazing he can do that while racing. So much to think about and do so I guess it isn't surprising to watch some guys not be able to handle their cars at all.
In the feature, Matthew had pulled out a half lap ahead of everyone and of course, you just want to see that white flag which doesn't come. The yellow flag came instead which is what we didn't want. From the restart, Matthew pulled away about a quarter of a lap and managed to come around to lap traffic. He went around the guy that had caused the last caution while I was holding my breathe the guy wouldn't spin out and you could see him coming down on the back stretch as he wasn't holding a line. Whew - made it through. Now, I was just hoping nothing would break! Success! Matthew is back in tech and another win.
Later, a guy stopped and told me he is fun to watch and that he has definitely figured it out. Had a lot of people talking to be in the stands too. Two good nights in a row is a first this season, so I hope the momentum continues. It was definitely a lot of fun and I could tell it on the way home too. It was all smiles and calm - except whether brothers decided to punch on each other. Eventually, Matthew used Jacob as his pillow and both were asleep.
In need of points and because they wanted three nights in a row, Matthew and Steve decided to head on to Colby. Jacob has football practice and Patty has to work, so Grandpa Brandt brings us back to Wichita. Before the races, the boys spot some tornados near the track in Colby and phone home for weather updates. After last weekends rain outs, I guess I thought we were done with bad weather. Ha. Looks like it will be east of them, so waiting to hear before I post this.
Just got the call - 1st in Colby rounds out a great weekend of racing! Next weekend is Dodge City and WaKeeney. Let's keep this going there! Hope everyone had a great Father's Day. I know Steve sure did and while exhausted, feels great about the weekend.
