Two Wins and Two Top Tens
June 1, 2010 - Two nights in Goodland with two wins and almost no drama. Matthew was leading by half a lap when he started slowing down. The rocker studs broke causing two push rods to bend and again, lost power. Luckily this happened at the end of the race and the boys were able to fix it.
WaKeeney was basically no fun at all. First night, Matthew was hit in the heat race so badly with damage to the rear end that was so bad, the boys weren't sure they could even make the feature. But, they didn't give up and Matthew got out there. He had to start dead last - 20th position. At one point, he was up to 13th and there was enough race left where I think he would have got to the top 5. But, he was hit going in to turn 4 and there is 100% no doubt, he should have gotten his spot back. Instead, they put him in the back and again, he drove hard and make his way to 9th before the race ended. Steve and I couldn't have been prouder. He didn't give up and had a descent finish considering it all. And a special thanks to Uncle Rich and to Jacob for working so hard on the car.
The boys woke up early Memorial Day and went straight to work. It took all day to make enough repairs to run Monday night. He worked his way up to 2nd in the heat race and was battling for first. It was pretty clear he was either going to win or finish side-by-side when the other guy hit him, causing a cut tire and ended his heat race. This meant that once again, he'd start dead last in the feature.
I can't tell you how disappointing and frustrating that was. But, he worked hard to get ready and mentally, he decided to make his goal to finish better than the night before. Couldn't ask for more.
The feature felt like the same race as the night before. He would work his way up, a caution would come out, they would put everyone back a lap and he'd pass the same cars again and again. At one point on turn 2, he started to spin out, but saved it and just as he recovered, a guy hit him. Guess who they put to the back. Poor kid. If he could have gotten passing points, it sure would have been a great points weekend! Instead, we don't even know the finish. He came in 8th and we were happy with the finish. But, when he went to pick up his check, they said they hadn't decided how to score the finish because apparently there was a wreck on the last lap, but the flagman never threw the yellow. We are still waiting to hear. I won't write any more. Let's just say there wasn't a call that went our way the entire weekend, so I don't expect this will end well either.
Matthew's progress is showing. He has learned so much. And Jacob has definitely learned a lot as well and is helping out at every turn. He is anxious to get to drive again. Now, we just need a little bit of luck to come our way! Hays, Dodge City and Colby this weekend.
Hope everyone had a relaxing, fun Memorial Weekend and took time to remember their loved ones. We didn't relax, but we definitely had all of our loved ones with us in body and in spirit.
