Jacob Winds Up While Matthew Winds Down
September 18 - Matthew returns for the final points show at Hays and ends up missing 2nd place at the track by just one point. He finishes 8th in the feature, but one is DQ'd giving him a 7th place finish. He was moving up on the field and was well on his way to a top five finish but two different drivers chose to knock him off the track. I have the video and it is pretty obvious. In one case, the guy had to turn right to knock Matthew off the track and in the other case, it was a straight away and he turned down into him. It is disappointing and frustrating when others choose to race that way, but even worse when they try to justify their actions instead of just apologizing. Matthew has no problems apologizing if he makes a mistake or gets into some one, but when some do that to him, we don't receive the same respect in turn from a few individuals. The few can sure makes things bad for the many. That's life.
September 19 - Jacob returns to 81 Speedway gaining much needed track time. The track was much better than last week allowing for some real racing and learning. It was still a very tacky, heavy track and Jacob has had most of his time on a dry track. So, he has to learn how to drive this type of track which is likely what he will have the rest of this season. The cooler weather looks to continue which greatly changes track conditions. Jacob did a fine job holding his line and driving consistently. He backs off to avoid bumping or hitting anyone, so he'll need to focus on that as we of course, don't want him to hit anyone but figure out how to get around them without using his brakes so much. Easier said than to learn. Think about how your instincts are to use the brake instead of the gas if a car is spinning out in front of you. This is the type of thing that comes with practice and seat time. Hopefully, Jacob can still get in four or five races this season to gain that experience. He finished 5th out of nine cars and he started in the back. He did a really fine job and was in control of his car the entire race.
