Oh So Very Close
July 24: Matthew finished 5th at Hays. Once again, he started about mid-pack and did a good job working his way through the field. The finish was a photo-finish. Some in the stands that were in front of the flag stand told us he should have gotten 4th. I have no idea. From where we were sitting, there was no way to tell. Plus all that matters is what the scorer sees. It was a good, clean race.
July 25: On to Osborne and a half-mile track. Matthew is clearly the fastest car on the track that night. He won his heat race by a front stretch. In the feature, he drove perfectly. Another guy had an advantage. He would jump the restart - every single time. Eventually, he made his way to first and jumped the restart to do it. By the time Matthew made his way through traffic actually passing cars during the race, he was in second and needed a caution but it didn't come. He was happy with his second and he knew he had the best car. He had driven flawlessly.
July 26: Back to Osborne again. For some unknown reason, they watered the heck out of the track. It was a perfectly great track the day before, but no more. Matthew had to start in the feature about mid-pack. I was asked why by a lot of people and it was a draw, redraw. Matthew can't draw. Or I should say he seems to have no luck drawing. He pulled the number 8.
Apparently, others were talking about the bad starts the night before and the story is this guy and the flagman are buddies. I don't know if that is true, but the guy definitely passed a lot of cars unfairly. Eventually, during the feature someone brought it to the attention of some of the track officials. This guy had made his way to second and did the jump on a restart with the first place car. Matthew was in third at the time. They moved him back one position to third and that is where he stayed. He couldn't pass anyone on the track during the race. Matthew drove hard and finished second again.
There were a lot of people in the stands cheering for Matthew. Half mile is a fast track and he sure did show he knew how to drive it.
