Two 6's
July 10 - Jacob's race is cancelled and moved to Saturday night. We feel bad but none of us what to split up either. Jacob is the most understanding soul about this. We travel to WaKeeney first where Matthew takes a 6th place finish. There was a lot of beating and banging. One guy hit Matthew so hard it actually bent the roll cage on the driver's side down by his foot. It was a lot of work the next day to pull out the sheet metal and fix the bar. The highlight of the day was getting to celebrate Grandma Effie's 85th birthday. The announcer was great about helping us with this and she enjoyed all the small surprises.
Next we were at Hays where Matthew finished 6th again. The announcer gave Grandma another "Happy Birthday" when Matthew rolled out explaining we were at WaKeeney the night before. That was fun. The antique racers were there and one of them said "Thanks Frank Offutt" on the back so I explained to the owner that Frank was Jacob's great-great Uncle. Later, in the races, Jacob calls to me in the stands all excited but I couldn't understand a word with all the noise so I ran to the pits to learn that Uncle Frank had been racing the car! I told his wife, Wilda, that I had talked to the owner and he didn't mention Frank would be driving. She said he didn't know at the time. They showed up at the track to watch their grandson race his sprint car and the owner asked him if he would like to race his car tonight. Frank never goes anywhere without his helmet and gear, so he was ready to go race! TOO FUNNY! I asked him if he had raced every type of car and he said everything but a modified. He is hoping someone will give him a chance. Frank and my Dad used to run around together when they were young. Frank is a young 70 something and ready to race anytime.
We enjoyed seeing a lot of family and friends. My cousins John and Twila were there to watch my cousin, Kenny run his sports modified. Kim and Brian, Uncle Clarence and Aunt Dorothy, Grandpa Brandt, Rich, Grandma Effie, Grandma and Grandpa Crowell and Nicole all came to cheer Matthew on. It was a great evening and a lot of fun. The support sure keeps us going!
Next weekend we head to Goodland for a two-night show and then to Colby.
